Applaud Minnesota Schools for Standing Up for Students

Minnesota educators are drawing a firm line to protect children — and they deserve our full support.

Two Minnesota school districts, joined by the statewide teachers union, have filed a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security after federal immigration agents carried out enforcement actions on and near school campuses. For decades, schools were recognized as protected spaces — places where children could learn without fear. The Trump administration tore up that safeguard, and Minnesota schools are now stepping in to defend their students when the federal government would not.

This lawsuit is about more than policy — it’s about children’s safety, dignity, and right to an education. Parents are afraid to send their kids to school. Attendance has dropped sharply. Students have been traumatized by raids, tear gas, and armed agents near classrooms and bus stops. Educators are being forced to shift to online learning just to keep kids safe. That is unacceptable in any democracy.

For 30 years, administrations of both parties recognized that immigration enforcement at schools causes harm and undermines public trust. By abandoning that long-standing rule without explanation, DHS has created chaos in classrooms and fear in entire communities. Minnesota schools are demanding accountability — and insisting that federal agencies follow the law and protect children, not terrorize them.

Add your name to applaud Minnesota school districts and educators for standing up for students, defending safe learning environments, and fighting to keep schools places of care, opportunity, and hope — not fear.
