Applaud Judge For Halting Tree Removal at D.C. Golf Course

Washington, D.C.'s historic public spaces deserve protection—and federal Judge Ana Reyes is taking action to stop further tree removal at East Potomac Golf Links while a legal challenge moves forward.

Judge Reyes has extended an order blocking the Trump administration from cutting down additional trees at the century-old golf course through October 26. The decision comes after federal workers removed at least 430 trees over a holiday weekend, despite earlier assurances that the court and plaintiffs would receive advance notice of major work at the site.

The lawsuit, brought by the D.C. Preservation League and two local residents, challenges the administration's plans to transform the public golf course. Government officials argue that the tree removal was routine maintenance based on an earlier landscape report, while the plaintiffs contend that it is connected to Trump's proposed redevelopment.

Judge Reyes has demanded answers from federal officials about how the tree removal was authorized and ordered additional testimony. Her decision gives the court time to examine the dispute before more trees are lost, reinforcing the importance of transparency, accountability, and protecting public land.
