Applaud Human Rights Groups for Defending Justice

Human Rights Watch, the American Friends Service Committee, the Center for Constitutional Rights, and the Open Society Institute have filed a federal lawsuit challenging sanctions targeting ICC judges, prosecutors, and organizations that work with the court. The groups argue that the administration’s actions are interfering with their human rights and legal work while violating constitutional protections.

The International Criminal Court exists to investigate and prosecute some of the world’s gravest crimes when accountability might otherwise be impossible. Governments may disagree with its decisions, but advocates argue that intimidating or punishing people simply for working with an international court threatens the broader pursuit of justice and accountability.

The lawsuit also raises important questions about Americans’ constitutional freedoms. The organizations say the sanctions have forced them to restrict their advocacy and legal work, infringing on rights protected by the First and Fifth Amendments and federal law.
