Applaud Governor Sherrill for Protecting New Jersey Privacy

New Jersey voters deserve secure elections and the protection of their personal information—and Governor Mikie Sherrill deserves applause for standing up for both.

After the Trump Department of Justice demanded the names, birthdates, home addresses, nationalities, and other sensitive personal information of thousands of New Jersey residents, Governor Sherrill refused, arguing that the request had "no legal basis" and would violate federal privacy protections.

Sherrill made clear that her administration is already addressing a voter registration error through an independent investigation and by working with local election officials to correct the records. At the same time, she emphasized that protecting eligible voters from being improperly targeted or removed from the voter rolls is just as important as maintaining accurate voter registration lists.

Free and fair elections depend on both election integrity and the protection of Americans' constitutional rights. Government officials have a responsibility to correct mistakes transparently while safeguarding citizens' privacy and ensuring that personal information is not disclosed without lawful authority.

By standing up to an overreaching federal demand, Governor Sherrill is defending New Jersey voters' privacy, protecting voting rights, and demonstrating that accountability and the rule of law can go hand in hand.
