Applaud Gavin Newsom for Standing Up to Trump’s Slush Fund

California Governor Gavin Newsom is taking a stand against Donald Trump’s controversial $1.776 billion “anti-weaponization” fund — and he deserves applause.

Newsom announced that California will pursue a 100 percent tax on any payouts from the fund received by California residents, calling it what many critics believe it is: a taxpayer-funded political slush fund.

The fund has sparked outrage because Trump refused to rule out payouts to individuals connected to the January 6 attack on the Capitol, raising serious concerns about corruption, abuse of public money, and rewarding political extremism.

At the same time, Newsom signed legislation aimed at protecting voters from intimidation and pushing back against federal efforts to interfere with state election systems.

This is about accountability and protecting democracy. Taxpayer dollars should support the public good — not finance political loyalty schemes or reward attacks on democratic institutions.
