We wholeheartedly applaud the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for its powerful and unanimous decision to reject the Trump administration’s attempt to avoid responsibility for wrongfully deporting Kilmar Abrego García, a Maryland resident, to a dangerous prison in El Salvador. Led by Judge Harvie Wilkinson, the panel rightly condemned the government’s shocking claim that it could do nothing to bring back someone it unlawfully expelled — a stance that threatens the very foundation of constitutional protections. In standing firm, the court reaffirmed the basic principles of due process, liberty, and accountability under the law. This decision isn’t just about one man — it’s a stand for every person’s right to be treated with fairness and dignity. The court's warning that the government’s logic could one day be used to target U.S. citizens should sound the alarm for all Americans. We commend the judges for calling this what it is: a grave abuse of power. We also recognize and honor District Judge Paula Xinis for continuing to press the administration for answers and for demanding swift action to right this wrong. In this time of political pressure and executive overreach, the judiciary has reminded us all that no one is above the Constitution. We thank the 4th Circuit for their courage and clarity, and for defending the ideals that define this nation. Let this ruling echo throughout every branch of government: the rule of law still matters.
