Applaud DNC Challenging Taxpayer-Funded Pro-Trump Ads

The Democratic National Committee is taking the Trump administration to court over a taxpayer-funded advertising campaign that portrayed President Donald Trump favorably, arguing that public money should not be used to produce what it describes as “campaign-style advertisements.”

The lawsuit points to federal restrictions on using congressionally appropriated money for unauthorized publicity or propaganda. It also cites laws restricting agencies from spending taxpayer funds for purposes Congress did not approve. According to NBC News, a $20 million contract was awarded for the advertising campaign, while an ad-tracking firm estimated that at least $10 million had been spent airing the ads through Monday.

The advertisements had already drawn criticism from lawmakers in both parties when Trump announced that government funding would stop and that he and his PAC would pay for the ads going forward. However, the announcement did not address whether taxpayers would be reimbursed for money already spent.

Now, the DNC is asking a federal judge to find that using congressionally appropriated funds for the advertisements was unlawful and to prevent the administration from using those funds for similar ads in the future.
