Applaud Democrats for Standing Up to Trump’s “Lake America”

House Democrats are pushing back after Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the federal government to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America,” with lawmakers preparing legislation to reverse the change.

Rep. Tim Kennedy of New York, co-chair of the bipartisan Northern Border Caucus, says he is working on a bill responding to Trump’s order, while Rep. Debbie Dingell of Michigan has also announced plans for legislation to reverse it.

Lake Ontario is one of the Great Lakes shared by the United States and Canada, and Canadian officials have already said they will not recognize Trump’s new name. The move also comes amid an escalating trade conflict between the two longtime allies, making cooperation and respect between neighboring countries especially important.

Americans deserve leaders focused on lowering costs, strengthening our economy, and maintaining productive relationships with our allies—not creating unnecessary international disputes over the names of shared bodies of water.

By moving quickly to challenge the executive order, Democrats are standing up against another presidential power grab and working to keep the focus on issues that actually affect American families.

Add your name to applaud Reps. Tim Kennedy and Debbie Dingell for challenging Trump’s “Lake America” order, defending common sense, and standing up for a strong relationship with Canada.
