Applaud Democrats for Standing Up to Trump’s Corruption

Democrats in Congress are fighting back against one of the most brazen acts of self-dealing in American history.

House leaders Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia are demanding answers — and launching an investigation — into reports that Donald Trump is trying to make the Justice Department pay him hundreds of millions of dollars in so-called “restitution” for past investigations into his crimes. Their message is clear: the presidency is not a personal piggy bank.

This outrageous scheme would violate the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause, which prohibits any president from enriching themselves with taxpayer money. By demanding transparency, Democrats are protecting our democracy from Trump’s attempts to turn public office into a profit center and the rule of law into a bargaining chip.

As Raskin and Garcia said, this is nothing less than “an outrageous and shocking attempt to shake down the American people.” They’re right — and they’re taking action to stop it.
