Applaud Democrats for Fighting Trump’s Voting Restrictions

Voting by mail gives millions of Americans a secure and accessible way to participate in our democracy—and Democrats are going back to court to stop the Trump administration from imposing new restrictions that could put those votes at risk.

The Democratic National Committee, Democratic campaign committees, congressional leaders, and other plaintiffs have renewed their effort to block Donald Trump’s anti-mail voting executive order after the U.S. Postal Service finalized new nationwide requirements for election mail.

Under the new rule, states would have to meet new ballot-envelope requirements, submit voter-identifying information and barcodes to the Postal Service, and risk having ballot mail refused if it fails to comply. Democrats argue that these requirements exceed the Postal Service’s legal authority and could leave eligible voters facing delays or rejected ballots through no fault of their own.

The stakes are especially high with the midterm elections approaching. Once voters have been denied the opportunity to cast a ballot and an election is over, that harm cannot simply be undone.

Our elections should be administered according to the Constitution and laws passed by Congress—not reshaped at the direction of a president seeking greater control over how Americans vote. The Postal Service’s job is to reliably deliver election mail, not serve as a new federal gatekeeper for the ballot box.

By taking this fight back to court, Democrats are standing up for voters, challenging executive overreach, and working to ensure that every eligible American can make their voice heard.
