Reps. Debbie Dingell, Tim Kennedy, and Joseph Morelle introduced the Hands Off Our Great Lakes Act, which would prohibit Trump and other federal officials from changing the names of Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario. The legislation would also prevent federal funds from being used to implement Trump’s Lake Ontario executive order. Lake Ontario has carried its name for centuries and is shared by the United States and Canada. Trump’s attempt to rename it comes amid an escalating trade war with Canada that is already imposing new costs on businesses, workers, and consumers in both countries. As Rep. Kennedy pointed out, renaming a lake won’t lower anyone’s bills, put food on families’ tables, or create jobs. Americans deserve leaders focused on affordability and strengthening our economy—not unnecessary distractions that further strain relations with one of our closest allies. By introducing this legislation, Democrats are moving beyond criticizing Trump’s order and taking concrete action to stop it while protecting all five Great Lakes from similar political stunts in the future. Add your name to applaud Reps. Debbie Dingell, Tim Kennedy, and Joseph Morelle for introducing the Hands Off Our Great Lakes Act, standing up to Trump’s attempted renaming of Lake Ontario, and protecting the Great Lakes for generations to come.
