Applaud DC’s Stand Against Trump’s Military Occupation

In a bold defense of democracy and local autonomy, Washington, D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb has filed a lawsuit to end President Trump’s unlawful deployment of National Guard troops to the nation’s capital. Nearly 2,300 troops have been stationed in D.C. since August 11 — an alarming move that Schwalb rightly calls an illegal “military occupation.”

The lawsuit makes clear: the Trump administration has overstepped its authority, violated the Constitution, and trampled on the Home Rule Act that gives D.C. residents control over their own government. By deputizing troops for law enforcement, the administration is blurring the line between military and civilian authority — a violation of long-standing laws designed to protect our democracy.

These deployments do nothing to keep our communities safe. Instead, they erode trust between residents and police, inflame tensions, and damage the local economy. The people of D.C. did not ask for troops in their streets — and they should not be forced to live under an unconstitutional military occupation.
