We applaud U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein for standing up for due process and the rule of law by ruling that the Trump administration unlawfully invoked the Alien Enemies Act (AEA) to deport individuals without sufficient evidence or legal justification. This decision marks the second major rebuke of President Trump’s abuse of an 18th-century wartime law to target Venezuelan migrants under the false pretense of a foreign “invasion.” Judge Hellerstein made clear: the Constitution does not allow the executive branch to deport people based on unsupported accusations and vague proclamations. His ruling rightly affirms that no one should be expelled from this country without due process, and that executive power must have limits—especially when it threatens the liberty and rights of noncitizens who have received no meaningful notice or hearing. We thank the judge for his courage, and we call on all courts to continue protecting fundamental rights and freedoms. This decision is a victory for justice, for immigrant rights, and for the principles our democracy is built on. Add your name to show your support.
