Applaud Court Blocking Trump's Name From Kennedy Center

A federal judge has blocked another attempt to put President Donald Trump’s name on the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, ruling that the center’s board cannot add a new inscription honoring Trump to the building or rename its grounds after him.

The Kennedy Center board had voted to add an inscription saying the building was “restored and renovated” by Trump and to rename the surrounding campus the “President Donald J. Trump Plaza.” But U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper found that those plans violated federal law and an earlier court order concerning the Kennedy Center’s name.

Congress established the Kennedy Center as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy, and federal law restricts the installation of additional memorials there. Cooper concluded that the board cannot install a memorial recognizing Trump—or anyone else—without congressional authorization.
