Applaud Canada for Standing Up for Lake Ontario

After Trump ordered U.S. federal agencies to adopt the new name, Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiled a massive billboard near the lake declaring, “Lake Ontario. Now and Always.” Ford made clear that Canada has no intention of accepting Trump’s unilateral change, saying the lake will still be called Lake Ontario long after Trump leaves office.

The name Lake Ontario also carries centuries of history. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney noted that “Ontario” comes from an Indigenous Wendat word and has been associated with the lake for more than 400 years. Wendat Nation Grand Chief Pierre Picard condemned Trump’s move as an attempt to erase Indigenous history, culture, and identity.
The dispute comes amid an escalating trade fight between the United States and Canada, including steep tariffs and retaliation from Ottawa. Rather than easing tensions with one of America’s closest neighbors, Trump has turned the name of a shared Great Lake into another unnecessary source of conflict.

Canada has every right to defend its history, sovereignty, and the name of a body of water it shares with the United States. A president cannot simply erase centuries of history with the stroke of a pen.
