Applaud California's New Immigration Enforcement Safeguards

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a package of new laws establishing additional restrictions, transparency requirements, and civil-rights protections related to immigration enforcement in the state!

Among the measures is Senate Bill 1004, which restricts law-enforcement officers from concealing their identities with masks, subject to specified exceptions. Another measure, Senate Bill 747, creates a state-law mechanism allowing people to sue federal officials for alleged violations of their federal constitutional rights.

The package also establishes new rules governing law-enforcement tactics. Senate Bill 937 restricts the use of flash-bang grenades and explosive breaching charges, while Assembly Bill 2760 establishes limits on wearable electroshock devices. Assembly Bill 1627 bars federal immigration officers found to have committed specified serious misconduct from subsequently becoming California peace officers or public employees.

Other provisions address immigration detention and enforcement infrastructure. Assembly Bill 1633 establishes a 25% tax on private detention facilities, with revenue directed toward immigration-related services, while Assembly Bill 1807 restricts the use of state-owned property for immigration-enforcement staging, processing, detention, or operations.

These efforts aim to increase transparency and oversight of federal immigration enforcement while protecting access to state institutions and services.
