Applaud California for Raising the Minimum Wage

Hard work deserves fair pay—and California deserves applause for continuing to invest in working families.

Governor Gavin Newsom has announced that California's minimum wage will increase to $17.40 per hour beginning January 1, giving the state the highest statewide minimum wage in the nation.

At a time when many families are struggling with the rising cost of housing, groceries, healthcare, and other everyday essentials, higher wages can help workers better support themselves and their loved ones. People who work full-time should be able to earn a paycheck that reflects the value of their labor and helps them meet the basic costs of living.

Raising the minimum wage also strengthens local communities. When workers have more money in their pockets, they spend it at neighborhood businesses, helping support local economies while creating greater financial stability for families.

California's decision reflects the belief that economic growth should benefit the people who keep our communities running every day—not just those at the top.
