Applaud CAIR for Defending Civil Rights Against Abbott

In a bold stand for civil rights, free speech, and constitutional protections, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has sued Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton after Abbott attempted to unilaterally designate the organization a “foreign terrorist” group — a baseless move that would strip CAIR members of fundamental rights, including the ability to buy land in Texas.

Abbott’s proclamation wasn’t just reckless — it was unconstitutional. It threatened “heightened penalties” against CAIR, relied on false claims linking the group to terrorism, and attempted to ban an American civil rights organization from owning property. CAIR’s lawsuit makes clear: this dangerous precedent would allow any governor to target any advocacy group with no evidence, no process, and no limits.

CAIR, joined by the Muslim Legal Fund of America, is fighting back — not only to defend its own members, but to protect every civil rights organization in the country from political retaliation. Litigation Director Lena Masri called the lawsuit “our first step towards defeating Governor Abbott again,” reminding the public that CAIR has already won three previous cases against Abbott’s First Amendment crackdowns.

Add your name to applaud CAIR for standing up to Abbott’s unconstitutional overreach and fighting to protect free speech, due process, and civil rights for all Americans.
