Applaud Al Green for Demanding Trump's Impeachment

Congressman Al Green has filed new articles of impeachment against Donald Trump, accusing the president of abusing his executive authority through the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection.

Green’s resolution argues that the administration has wielded federal immigration agencies as “unaccountable paramilitary police forces,” pointing to allegations of violence, secrecy, intimidation, and a lack of accountability during Trump’s immigration crackdown. He argues that these actions represent an abuse of presidential power serious enough to warrant congressional action.

No president should be above constitutional limits. Federal law enforcement agencies wield enormous power, and Congress has a responsibility to investigate allegations of abuse, demand transparency, and use its constitutional authority when lawmakers believe a president has committed impeachable offenses.

Filing articles of impeachment does not itself remove a president from office. But it puts allegations of executive misconduct before Congress and demands that lawmakers confront whether presidential power has been abused.

At a time when communities are demanding answers about the conduct of federal immigration agents, Green is using Congress’s constitutional powers to push for accountability.
