Protect residents in El Paso, Texas, from pollutants from commercial vehicles crossing the Bridge of the Americas (BOTA). People who live in El Paso, Texas, suffer from some of the worst air pollution in the country due to idling vehicles waiting to cross the Bridge of the Americas (BOTA), an international port-of-entry that connects the United States and Mexico. Pollutants from the vehicles, like ozone and fine particulate matter, cause life-altering health problems, such as asthma, lung cancer, heart attacks, and premature death. To combat this problem, the BOTA is receiving more than $700 million of federal Bipartisan Infrastructure funding for necessary upgrades and renovations. This long-overdue investment should be used as intended: to reduce our carbon footprint and improve public health. Now, there is an opportunity for the public to weigh in to make sure this happens. Viable Action Alternative 4 modernizes the BOTA to better accommodate pedestrian and passenger vehicles, eliminates all commercial cargo operations on the BOTA, and closes the BOTA to high-polluting commercial vehicles. This is the only option on the table that promotes environmental justice by reducing dangerous air pollution and harm to surrounding communities. The trucking industry is doing everything they can to avoid responsibility for their toxic emissions and be allowed to continue polluting communities. Join Earthjustice, the premier environmental law organization, in urging the U.S. General Services Administration to clean up the air for Texans by pursuing Alternative 4.
