According to a harrowing new report from the Death Penalty Information Center, 35 percent of all death penalty executions imposed in the United States in 2022 were “visibly problematic” as a result of “executioner incompetence, failures to follow protocols, or defects in the protocols themselves.” “Among those executed last year were prisoners with serious mental illness, brain damage, intellectual disability, and strong claims of innocence,” the report notes. At the same time, imposition of the death penalty in the United States remains rife with racial disparities, with people of color once again overrepresented among those executed. The death penalty is a cruel and barbaric practice – and it’s past time the United States does away with it once and for all.
