Stop Meta from Using Data Centers to Avoid Billions in Taxes

Meta is trying to turn its massive AI data centers into a multibillion-dollar tax dodge.

New reporting shows Meta has classified its AI data centers as "experimental" facilities in order to claim huge federal research tax credits. The result: Meta’s savings from the research tax credit reportedly jumped from $700 million in 2023 to $3.9 billion in 2025.

That money should be helping fund schools, healthcare, housing, infrastructure, and public services. Instead, one of the largest corporations on Earth is using a tax break meant to support real research and experimentation to slash its bill while communities deal with the costs of its data center boom.

Tell Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and IRS CEO Frank Bisignano: "Investigate Meta’s use of research tax credits for AI data centers, claw back any improper tax benefits, and stop Big Tech from using data centers to avoid paying its fair share."

Meta says it is investing in research and development. But tax experts have questioned whether calling massive data centers "experimental" goes far beyond what the research credit was intended to cover. Even Meta’s own filings reportedly warn that billions in tax savings could be vulnerable if the IRS challenges them.

This is not just an accounting dispute. Data centers are driving up electricity demand, consuming public resources, and securing billions in state and local tax breaks. Families are already struggling with higher costs, while Big Tech keeps finding new ways to shift the burden onto everyone else.

Add your name now and demand that federal tax officials investigate Meta’s AI data center tax scheme and make Big Tech pay what it owes.

The petition to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and IRS CEO Frank Bisignano reads: “Investigate Meta’s use of research tax credits for AI data centers, claw back any improper tax benefits, and stop Big Tech from using data centers to avoid paying its fair share.”
