Keep Big Oil’s Money Out of the Supreme Court

Justice Samuel Alito reportedly made as much as $2.9 million from fossil fuel interests while serving on the Supreme Court.

Now the Court is preparing to hear a major climate case that could help determine whether state and local governments can hold Big Oil accountable for climate damages.

That is a glaring conflict of interest. No justice should be allowed to profit from an industry and then help decide whether that same industry can be sued for the damage it causes.

Tell Justice Samuel Alito and the U.S. Supreme Court: "Justice Alito must recuse himself from fossil fuel climate cases, and the Court must adopt enforceable ethics rules to keep fossil fuel conflicts out of the courtroom."

The case, Suncor Energy v. Boulder County, could have enormous consequences for communities trying to make fossil fuel companies pay for the floods, fires, heat waves, and destruction fueled by the climate crisis. If the Supreme Court shields Big Oil from accountability, ordinary people will keep paying the price while fossil fuel giants walk away richer.

Public trust in the Supreme Court is already collapsing. The Court’s weak, unenforceable ethics code is not enough. Justices should not get to decide for themselves when their financial ties create a conflict, especially when the stakes involve one of the most powerful industries on Earth.

Fossil fuel companies have spent decades misleading the public, delaying climate action, and forcing communities to shoulder the costs of their pollution. They should not get a Supreme Court tilted by undisclosed wealth, industry investments, or conflicts of interest.
